Hot Water System Annual Running Cost Comparison

Sustainability Victoria has released data comparing the annual running costs of various hot water systems, helping homeowners identify the most cost-effective options for heating water. With the Victorian government’s hot water rebate, homeowners have an even greater opportunity to lower their upfront costs and improve efficiency.

The data compares several systems: a 5.5-star gas storage system, a 7-star gas instantaneous system, an electric storage off-peak system, a high-efficiency solar electric boosted system, an instant LPG system, and a high-efficiency electric hot water heat pump on an off-peak tariff.

For example, common electric storage hot water systems in Victoria cost an average of $1,015 per year to operate, while a heat pump system costs just $205 annually — a saving of over $800. Other systems like natural gas instant ($655) and LPG gas instant ($1,480) vary, but heat pumps remain the most cost-effective solution.

It’s important to note that running costs depend on factors like electricity tariffs, specific models, and water usage, but with the heat pump rebate, homeowners can significantly reduce both upfront and long-term costs.

VEU's Recommendation

The VEU program recommends sizing your system based on the number of bedrooms, as the number of people in a household changes over time. For example, the demand for hot water might increase with the addition of children or tenants. For 4 or more bedroom house recommended tank size for hot water system is more than 300 litres.

A system that is too small for your household may mean regularly running out of hot water. Consider a larger system if you have high hot water consumption.

Here are 8 top reasons to make the switch to an Electric Hot Water Heat Pump system

Our Hot Water Heat Pump system takes heat from the air to provide reliable hot water whenever you need it. It’s like tapping into free energy! This innovative technology uses up to 80% less energy than conventional water heaters, ensuring you have hot water day and night, while keeping your energy costs down.
Experience lifetime savings of up to $15,000 over 15 years with a Hot Water Heat Pump system, showcasing its remarkable energy efficiency. By extracting heat from the air to heat water instead of generating heat directly, this system significantly reduces electricity usage. Unlike conventional gas hot water systems, our electric hot water heat pump system operates more efficiently, lowering your energy bills while ensuring consistent hot water availability.
CoP, or Coefficient of Performance, is all about efficiency. It’s a number that tells you how much heating or cooling you get from the heat pump for each unit of energy it uses. Our electric hot water heat pump system has a remarkable CoP of 5.2! From 1kW of power input, it can create over 5kW of output heat, which is a remarkable 500% performance efficiency.
By installing the heat pump hot water system, you can claim up to $3,000 government rebates. A select number of Hot Water Heat Pumps qualify for Small Scale Technology Certificates (STCs). Furthermore, the Australian government—both federal and state—is really pushing for heat pump technology to help hit their zero emissions goal by 2050.
Another great reason to go with our heat pump water heaters is their solid warranty: 7 years on the cylinder, 5 years on the compressor, and 2 years on workmanship. Plus, they’re practically maintenance-free. Unlike regular gas hot water systems, our electric hot water heat pump systems have fewer parts that can break down. So, you’re looking at fewer chances of things going wrong. Also, because they don’t use fuel or flames, there’s no buildup to clean out regularly. That means less hassle—usually just a quick yearly check-up!
Unlike those old-school gas hot water systems that can make a racket, our electric hot water heat pumps run quietly. So, no more annoying background noises—just a peaceful vibe at home. They operate at a gentle 48/58 dBA, so you’ll hardly even know they’re on.
By relying on natural heat sources, our hot water heat pump systems contribute to a greener planet. They operate on eco-friendly principles, leaving a smaller environmental footprint compared to their electric counterparts.

With high demand for our heat pump hot water tank, new prices start from $770! Don’t wait any longer—boost your efficiency and savings with our top-notch heat pump technology.

So, there you have it – the top eight reasons to go with our heat pump hot water system. Now it’s your call: Are you ready to switch to a heat pump hot water system and save on bills while doing your part for the environment? Make the smart choice!

Electric Hot Water Heat Pump FAQs for more information

A heat-pump water heater uses much less electricity than an electric storage water heater.

This is because it only requires electricity to drive the compressor and the fan, instead of using electricity to heat the water directly, with an electric element.” source: https://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/

The system uses renewable energy to generate hot water without the need for a solar panel, and produces hot water with 80% greater efficiency than a traditional electric hot water unit. The systems work day and night, rain, hail or sunshine!

The hot water system uses Heat Pump technology, similar to an air-conditioner or fridge operating in reverse:

  • A fan draws in air containing ambient heat, which converts the internal refrigerant liquid to a gas.
  • A compressor then pressurizes the gas, creating heat, which is then used to heat the water inside the tank.
  • After heating, the gas reverts back into a liquid and starts over again.

Heat pump systems require airflow, very similar to a split system a/c unit, which is why they need to be installed outside. You are still eligible for the rebate, you only have to pay for the relocation of services (water and power) to an external location for the new system. Relocations range from $499-$999 depending on roof access, the distance of relocation.

We currently service all of Victoria and New South Wales. We will be expanding this to other areas across Australia, feel free to register your interest now and we’ll be in touch when we’re in your area!

If you currently have an electric or gas hot water heater, your best option is to replace it with a heat-pump hot water heater, rather than replacing like-for-like. There are government incentives available to upgrade to a more efficient heat-pump hot water heater. Contact us for more information

There are three different government rebates that Victorian households can access when upgrading to an efficient heat pump hot water system.

  • Federal Government Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs): STCs for heat pump hot water systems in Victoria are worth $1,040.Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are federal government heat pump hot water rebates available for authorised hot water heat pump installations. STCs function similarly to a point-of-sale discount, lowering the purchase price of a heat pump hot water system.

The value of STCs is determined by a zoning system used throughout Australia. When compared to the rest of Australia, Victorians receive the highest STC rate for a heat pump system.

Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates, or VEECs, are available to all Victorian families and companies who convert from an inefficient electric or gas hot water system.  Those who switch from antiquated electric-resistive hot water systems will receive the most bang for their buck with their VEECs. This is because ancient electric hot water systems emit the greatest glasshouse gases.

In addition to the federal government’s STC rebates for heat pump hot water systems, VEECs are available.  They function similarly to STCs as a point-of-sale discount.

Victorians are eligible for both the VEEC and STC rebates. Upgrades from an old electric hot water system to a heat pump hot water system are eligible for rebates.

Electric Heat pumps are becoming popular because they are energy-efficient – they don’t depend on fossil fuel usage to produce cool and warm air. This means that consumers will use less gas and electricity with heat pumps compared to other systems, as well as less money. This will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, taking the pressure off both the planet and your budget.

Moving to a heat pump means you can avoid the volatile prices associated with gas. If you are using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or electric heating, you could see a reduction to your energy bill if you move to a heat pump.

Electric Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than traditional boilers and use cleaner electricity, so will reduce your home’s carbon footprint. A heat pump takes heat at a low temperature from the air or ground, increases that heat to a higher temperature and transfers it into your home to provide heating and hot water.

To be eligible for the Solar Homes Program, you must be the owner-occupier of a property valued at under $3 million, with a combined household taxable income below $210,000 per year. The property address should not have received a rebate under this program before, and the heat pump water heater to be replaced must be at least three years old from the date of purchase.
